چکیده
Micro-computed tomography, or micro-CT, is being employed by a rapidly increasing number of laboratories for osteoporosis and other bone research, while the technology is still in its first decade. Bone biologists (and other biologists also) are a significant group of micro-CT users. This article is intended to give users without an extensive background of physics a better understanding of the methodology with its capabilities and limitations. The background of micro-CT bone analysis will be outlined, along with a superficial look at physical principles underlying the technique. There is a brief examination of the methodology of two important types of micro-CT analysis morphometric and density measurement. Finally there will be a review of some selected applications of micro-CT in published bone research, including both ex vivo and in vivo analysis of bone.

Bone micro-architectural analysis of mandible and tibia in ovariectomised rats
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate if micro-CT can work as a method for the 3D assessment and analysis of cancellous bone by comparing micro-CT with undecalcified histological sections in OVX rats. METHODS The mandible and tibia of sham, ovariectomised (OVX) and zoledronate-injected ovariectomised (OVX-ZOL) rats were assessed morphometrically. Specimens were scanned by micro-CT. Undecalci...
متن کاملThe evaluation of the correlation between histomorphometric analysis and micro-computed tomography analysis in AdBMP-2 induced bone regeneration in rat calvarial defects
PURPOSE Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has been widely used in the evaluation of regenerated bone tissue but the reliability of micro-CT has not yet been established. This study evaluated the correlation between histomorphometric analysis and micro-CT analysis in performing new bone formation measurement. METHODS Critical-size calvarial defects were created using a 8 mm trephine bur in ...
متن کاملQuantification of periapical bone destruction in mice by micro-computed tomography.
Bacterial infections of the dental pulp result in tissue destruction and periapical bone resorption. The availability of genetically engineered mouse strains is a major advantage in the use of this model system for studies of periapical pathogenesis. The main limitation of the mouse model is its small size, and the necessity for laborious histologic analyses to quantify periapical bone destruct...
متن کاملMicro-Computed Tomography for the Evaluation of Bone Architecture
Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an emerging technique for the nondestructive assessment and analysis of the three-dimensional trabecular bone structure. Trabecular bone consists of a complicated three-dimensional network of plates and rods, arranged in a lattice-like network [1]. Aging, disease process, and therapeutic agents could influence the number of elements in this network, their...
متن کاملA Comparison of Micro-CT and Dental CT in Assessing Cortical Bone Morphology and Trabecular Bone Microarchitecture
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the trabecular bone microarchitecture and cortical bone morphology by using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and dental cone-beam computed tomography (dental CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen femurs and eight fifth lumbar vertebrae were collected from eight male Sprague Dawley rats. Four trabecular bone microa...
